Found myself at the Wiz Khalifa concert in Pompano Beach and over a few of the sets before Wiz I drew a lot of attention to this performance. Emir Duru and this mixtape was rockk'n, you had no choice but rockk along with it. The "In For The Thrill Remix" was a great ending note with the singer keeping the crowd up and hype. If you ever come across this mixtape I definitely suggest you listen. I expect to see more from this artist and the movement, that energy would be a waste to loose.

24: Your new single, "I Get Doe" is doing quite well. Can you tell us about the song and how it came about?

Really man just working with The Cataracs, they brought something out of me, we did some work and they brought some stuff and that’s just one of the records we did. Them dudes real magical and like I said, they brought the best of out me and we made some shit that continuously growing slowly but it’s growing none the less.

24: Tell us about your new EP you just released, "Drive-By Muzik".

It’s just a in-depth look at the mind-state that you have when you gangbangin’ and the whole mentality that go along with it. The drive-bys, the whole feeling you get, the reason you feel like it’s cool, the actual action itself so the EP is really in detail. It’s just a real in-depth look at gangbangin’; It’s real hard at times so it just talks about all the elements that go into that and into drive-bys and what it’s about. I have a song on their called "Emergency Room" which is a story about when one of my homeboys got shot and how it was sitting in the emergency room waiting to see if he was going to make it or not so its songs simple as that compared to other songs like "Still In The City" and its talking about how people want to get at me and say they want to hurt me from the same city I’m from. I don’t give a fuck what I’m doing, when or on thisrap shit, it don’t matter; I’m still right here. I’m on a mission so it’s just a real range of the whole mentality of a gangbanger and that real aggressive attitude that you have and I just went into it with details.

24: How is this separate from your upcoming debut album "Beach Cruiser"?

Beach Cruiser is a compilation of what it’s like to be in California. Beach Cruiser is me taking my role in the rap game as the official reporter of what’s going on in California from Sacramento down to San Diego, talking about this lifestyle out this way compared to Drive-By Muzik which is an in-depth look at Los Angeles period.

24: Speaking of Beach Cruiser, what is the actual hold up on the album?

Hit records man. It’s all about hit records. Having a hit record to make sure the world is aware of Glasses Malone. That’s what singles do. Singles are an awareness so people can know of Glasses Malone and that you need to check out his music. I haven’t had a song that’s big enough yet to be honest. I have a lot of popular songs but I don’t have huge songs and who I’m playin for, I play for Cash Money Records so it’s like the biggest team to play for so with the best team, come high expectations so its all about fulfilling expectations. I have an official date now but it ain’t official until it come out so I’ma let it get closer before we start talking about it but I’ll definitely get back to y’all when I’m definitely 100% concrete about it.

24: Which producers and artists did you work with on the project?

It’s all family. It’s either people I dealt with on a personal level and production-wise, it was new people. This album is a lot better because it’s all me. Its Cash Money, Hoo Bangin’ and people from where I’m from in Watts. It was all a close knit record. Wasn’t no reaching out crazy but really just dope shit.

24: In the past, you’ve done a lot of records with fellow West Coast MC Jay Rock. Is there a possibility of a joint mixtape or EP in the future?

We’ve been talking about it. We definitely need to do it we just ain’t did it yet. It’s a great chance. We need to do it that’s for damn sure. We just gotta sit down and do it. We work so good together and like I say, Jay bring the best out of me all the time, anytime I go to Top Dawg period, that whole camp bring the best out of me because those dudes, the whole Black Hippie camp are real lyricists and MC’s so I go over there and really have to put on a show and let em’ know. I’m that fifth member of Black Hippie that no one talks about.

24: Tell us about Blu Division and what’s to come from your label and artist Quiz?

Quiz is the man. Period. Y’all hear his music, y’all see what he’s about. It ain’t nothing to it. It is what it is. That dude is hot. He got a hot project, hot video and we looking to put his record out independently at the top of the year. As a whole, Blu Division is puttin’ out records period. We putting out albums independently so it is what it is. We on our shit right now and ready to deliver and if you wanna get your shit put out, then this gon’ be the place to be. In the L.A. area as a matter of fact. Hip hop in general, that’s what we on right now.

24: In your opinion, how would you describe the changes in the music industry from when you first started til now.

It’s like night and day. You got all the things that happened to radio that changed the game, the internet has changed. It became more relevant. Technology with videos, everybody has videos. It’s just changed completely. It’s just crazy. If you a hustler you gotta adjust what your willing to adjust. A lot of the gangsta shit ain’t really in right now. It’s more about everything else so I watched that happen while being in the industry too.

24: Your label-mate Brisco has a hit record out called "On The Wall" featuring Lil Wayne and the record is doing quite well. How do you feel about his success right now?

That nigga deserve it! When I first came to the label that nigga been working hard. E-Class always believed in that dude. Birdman believes in that dude. Brisco stays on his grind. You can’t do nothing but be happy for niggaz like Brisco. That’s like B.O.B., I was so ecstatic for him because I watched these dudes grind like me and they finally got it. Its like a blessing. It’s unbelievable. I’m so happy for that dude, that nigga deserve everything he gets.

24: So can we expect a Glasses Malone/Brisco record(s) in the near future?

We got a few songs together. We was down in Miami recently working on some new stuff now. We didn’t get a chance to start on it but we got records together already. Bris is a good dude, I fuck wit him, guaranteed you gon’ hear some Brisco/Glasses shit real soon. We just gotta get in there and make some shit.

24: With music being so accessible to the consumer with free downloadable music, what do you feel is needed for you to become a household name?

Hit records from me. Everybody just needs to hear my music. It’s not just in one song your going to understand what I’m about and that makes me different from everybody else. I haven’t been able to figure out one song since "Certified" that could really give you all of me and "I Get Doe" is the closest thing after that. I just gotta make sure everybody hears my music. That’s the thing, if everybody heard it, it would be different but you just gotta keep working. It’s a work in progress.

24: What are your thoughts on the music industry and it’s current state?

It’s wonderful. It’s back in the hands of the independent businessman. That’s always wonderful. It’s a lot less out of the hands of people who aren’t into hip hop and more into the hands who are into it so its always a wonderful thing.

24: What’s the current status of your relationship with The Game and Black Wallstreet?

I fuck with everybody at Black Wallstreet. I was just with Kanary [Diamonds] recently doing some stuff with MTV and I got records with Menace. X.O. is somebody I been fuckin’ it. Me and Chuck [The Game] just cool. It is what it is. I definitely been rooting for his whole roster for a long time. From when I was a part of it to the new niggaz that’s on it now, I’ve been rooting for that roster forever so Black Wallstreet always been good. Joe Crack and all the niggaz that’s been down over there. I been fuckin’ with them. Chuck did a lot for me and my career so we always gon’ be good. I ain’t got shit negative to say because everybody deserves to win in this business especially some of the people on that label that’s been trying and that’s been at it. Chuck is very instrumental in what everybody is doing on the West Coast. As long as he’s hot it keeps the light here. We just gotta stay hot. That’s the key for him. He’s really like the leader of the new school. That’s the truth.

24: What else are you working on?

Mac & Malone. That’s me a Mack 10 collab album. It’s called "Money Muzik". It’s finished now. It’s crazy. We gon’ shoot a lot of visuals. We taking it to a whole new level. That’s what I’ve been working on.

24: Introduce yourself to everyone that may not be familiar already with who you are.

I’m J-Norrell. Local artist out of Miami. Been on the grind for awhile. A lot of people know me and for for those who don’t know me, hopefully you’ll get to know me real soon.

24: Briefly describe who were some of the artists that influenced you?

Honestly, I’ve been influenced by all music. A lot of R&B, a lot of rap, a lot of everything. I just like music. I like live sound so just music alone, instruments and all that.

24: What makes J-Norrell unique as an artist and different from other rappers coming out of Miami?

A lot of variety. I’m on an upper-level then a lot of different guys because I record my own music, I write my own music, I engineer my own music. A lot of thing I bring to the table right now, a lot of guys out there aren’t bringing that to the table. For me, this is something that’s real, something I’ve always dreamed of doing and always wanted so it is just what it is. My work ethic is crazy. I do five songs on a six hour block. Recording, mixing, everything. In one day literally I can have an album done. I‘m really different from a lot of guys that’s out there right now.

24: Are you happy with the feedback you’ve been getting from the music you’ve released so far? Do you think the response for The Pull Out will surpass that?

Yea most definitely. When I dropped that New Age Hustle, I got it into a lot of people’s hands and got a great response from that and I know for a fact, The Pull Out will be a shocker and a surprise to a lot of people. I definitely know that it’s going to do well as soon as it hits the streets.

24: What are you currently working on?

A project that’s already done and in the streets is a mixtape I put out called “The New Age Hustle”. Probably be able to find that anywhere. If you can’t find it anywhere you can definitely get it online at Jnorrell.com and right now I’m working on my latest one, its called ”The Pull Out” and I’m dropping that December 1st. That’s currently what I’m working on.

24: Is there a single we should look out for?

I actually have two singles off The Pull Out. One for the streets and one for the club. One is called “Money Right” and the other one is called “Satellite”. I’ma hit ‘em in the head wit this one. It’s a real big track produced by my boy DJ Mixx so you definitely wanna be on the lookout for “Satellite”.

24: How do you feel about the current state of hip hop in general?

Well… it’s a business. In my honest opinion, it is what it is man. You got a lot of guys that’s on the way but hey, there’s not a hatin’ bone in my body. If they there, they got there for some type of reason so it is what it is. Congratulations to em’, I salute em’ but as from where I’m coming from, you just gotta see what it really is. Of course I’m gonna set the tone for what I’m bringin’ to the table so when people actually get to hear it, listen to it, understand it, etc. It’s definitely going to be something that sticks around, the name is definitely going to be something that’s ringing and it’s going to keep people asking and talking about it.

As you undoubtedly already know (you're listening to it now, right?), today we dropped Vol. 4 of our Best of the Booth mixtape series - thanks to everyone who made Vol. 3 such an enormous success, - and this time around we have the honor of working with DJ Skee, the L.A. based entrepreneur, media personality and foundation of the new school DJ scene.

Before Best of the Booth Vol. 4 becomes the first mixtape to win both a Grammy and Nobel Peace Prize (yeah, it's that dope) we thought we'd take a step back and get to know the man behind the boards. In addition to playing some of the highest profile DJ gigs in the country, Skee is currently continuing to build his Skee.TV channel, his new Skeetox concert series, and too many other ventures to name here. In this five question interview, Skee explains the roots of his extraordinary work ethic, the inevitable rise of west coast hip-hop, how technology has opened the DJ game up for the better and much, much more.

You've become a leader in the west coast hip-hop movement. Can the west coast can regain the status on the national scene it once enjoyed?

Absolutely, every region and zone has its ups and downs, the west coast being no different. The jerk movement last year, although it came and went, showed a new side of LA and represented what these kids out here in LA were really doing. Similarly, there are a few unique sounds heavily centered in LA right now ranging from the expansion of dubstep from London to here, the Electro/Dance craze (with groups like Far East Movement), to a new breed of talent in hip-hop coming up. With LA and the West being the cultural mecca that it is, it will always have its moments in the spotlight for music.

Your sets are renowned for their versatility. How would you describe your DJing style?

Thank you- I just like to play good music, it doesn't matter the style. I grew up listening to everything from rock, jazz, hip-hop, etc., and love incorporating a touch of everything in my sets.
Obviously, each time I play is different- on HipHopNation im not going to play outside of street hip-hop, with KIIS its more mainstream (but still dope) music, and in the club its whatever rocks the crowd. I try to absorb as much as I can from others and play for the people while at the same time never turning my back on my style, sound, records I play, or what I am known for. I just evolve and try to have fun and play dope music.

For you, what's the difference between a professional DJ and an amateur?

Being able to live off of DJing as a full time job verse just playing for fun. Obviously you always want to have fun, but being a professional and making a living, in any area, you have to sacrifice sometimes and it becomes work then, verses an amateur who may just play in the bedroom for fun. Now with Serato and virtual DJing programs it is so easy to pick up and say your a DJ, there are a lot more amateurs, and pros for that matter, and a lot of DJs hate the accessibility that has come with it and all the DJs out of know where.

I understand that point, but I personally see it as a chance for many more people to shine, new technology to evolve and make new things possible on a Dj performance level, and the aftermath to be the art of DJing evolving into new areas no one will see coming. These kids coming up now are killing it at such a young age and grew up on these technological advances so its going to be amazing to see them 10 years from now.

You've been much more than "just" a DJ, putting on your Skeetox concert series, coordinating marketing efforts and much more. What inspired you to step out from behind the turntables?

Similar to what I was saying before, I wanted to evolve. I feel like every DJ has the same songs now thanks to Mp3s and Serato, and kind of got bored doing just the regular DJ shows and playing the same songs, and with DJ culture becoming so popular, wanted to take the live DJ stage show to another level. Obviously, others like Travis & AM, or even say a Dead Mau5 or Daft Punk even set the bar high with live shows, I took influence from everything I saw to create my vision of Skeetox as today's ultimate live DJ concert.

On the biz side, I've always been involved in that and enjoy building , breaking, and marketing artists and products as much as anything else. I get bored quickly and can't always do the same thing, I want to see whats next.

I despise people who leak music. Sometimes a record is just meant to be heard and received in the way its creator intended. Therefore, when Pittsburgh star and DJBooth Freestyle Alum Wiz Khalifa’s first single (off of his yet-to-be-titled Rostrum/Atlantic debut album) subsequently leaked yesterday, I was greatly disappointed. Not by the song’s content, but by the manner in which it was initially presented. Once word spread, though, Wiz immediately took to Twitter and announced that he would be releasing the official version of Black and Yellow at midnight. Produced by hit-making team Stargate, Khalifa’s latest is a chest pounding nod to the colors of his football-crazed hometown, released just in time for Steelers season. How good is the song? You can say that Wiz plays Franco Harris on this one: turning a seemingly terrible situation into an outstanding win for his team. Black and Yellow is a truly special song, if not just because of how dope it is, then it overcame the possibility of being just another leak. With hit-potential written all this one, Black and Yellow is sure to get an immaculate reception.

I thought this episode was hilarious, it went in a different direction making Riley his friend. I seen the videos of Latarian a few months back as soon as I seen the first scene I knew exactly who it was about. I like how they made is character dynamic still instead of just evil. Bringing the obsessed man that wants him dead allowed Lamilton to keep his innocence. Overall I put this episode in with my other favorites.

Anticipated Movie "Prince of Persia"

While walking on Collins Ave. I noticed indian themed women dancing at this store entrace. After walking past a few more times i went in to find out that the store was doing promotions fot the "Prince of Persia" movie. Everything had an ethnic theme plus a spread of apetizers like cury chicken wasnt bad. I grabbed 2 free posters on the way out after I triead all the food. lol

I'm interested in how the movie will turn out compared to other movies based off of games and vise versa. I never actualy had the chance to play the game yet I've seen the gameplay, the movie definately needs to bring the story to a new level. If it only repeats what happens in the game im sure gamers would want a refund. Im confident that I will be proven wrong.

Now I know Tabi aint the hottest rapper in the game right now but you gotta respect his grind. He always has somthing different from all others bringing a fresh style to the game. The imaging and audio in this video is crazy. Most of you might think he's prolly not do'n all that great in the game but he's holding down his own clothing line, touring overseas, and i'm pretty sure he's keeping a big percentage of the pie unlike the average that has to get last pick.
Definately some one I look up to when it comes to the industry, he does him, no hating strait shinning.

Must See Classic: "The Warriors"

Definitely a must see movie. Iconic feature of a New York gang society. All is good with a truce between the gangs until some one kills the leader of the biggest gang. The warriors are blamed but they don't back down for anything. Its a long way back to Conney and a lot of obstacles in the way. One of the best movies I've ever seen. I made logos and vests for my rap group "the weapons" inspired by this film.

Rockstar games made a video game based on this movie. Not only did you get to relive the scenes of the movie, you go before that night learning more about the members. Over all the game was really good, I've played through it several times. A lot of ruthless street fighting, problem solving, and sore thumbs.
